The Hidden Beauty Bag was born out of a project through the club I helped found at FIT, Bacheechi. Our clubs mission is to showcase avant garde designer's and their work.
Our club self organized a conceptualization and fabrication of our designs which led to a street style photoshoot in SoHo during Fashion week in 2023.
Our concept was called Distorted Reality, in which we each came up with our own theme to represent our perception of a distorted reality.
My concept, called Hidden Beauty, deals with the feelings and harsh reality of having to hide ones true self and sexual identity out of fear and ridicule. The bag's beginning state is black with strips of off-white peaking through, alluding to something hidden within. Once the front facade of the bag is released, the hidden rainbow colors are revealed in a dramatic unveiling of sequined material. Featuring a rainbow sequined UFO and floor length sequined fabric, the end result shows just how much beauty can be hidden within the unexpected.
